Ichiban - Gansett Ave, Cranston RI

An unassuming restaurant from the outside, I've recently , finally tried out Ichiban in Cranston, it's a Korean/Japanese restaurant.  Upon sitting down at the sushi bar, I'm given traditional Korean side dishes, beans, fish cakes, kimchi, and another cabbage like thing. Tasty and spicy. I'm reviewing the sushi here though. Sooo, I've tried a few different rolls this time an Ebony and Ivory was one that catches my eye, a white tuna with scallion roll topped with black and red tobiko. So delicious. I picked up a few different nigiri consisting of tobiko, saba, hotate, and tai. Everything freshly sliced (scallops were not), but the sushi chef careful slices and prepares everything fresh and assembles it for you to enjoy.  The staff here are incredibly friendly and attentive of your needs. I had a great conversation with Jim on how certain foods are prepped, how other things are made, and just general chat as well . I never feel rushed and I was treated to a "dessert" hand roll of a sweet tasting seafood salad , he calls a dynamite. Everything tasted great and I always find myself wanting to go back again. I can't say they have a huge selection of fish, but considering the location, it's hard to have the less frequently asked for stuff due to price and how quickly it must be used. I find that in a lot of places.  Ichiban is a great place, friendly owners, convenient to get to if you are in the area, and not expensive.  I hope you get the chance to try them out as well....

Haruki - 1210 Oaklawn Ave. Cranston, RI 02920

Tried out Haruki today since I've seen all the hype about it. The parking lot was jammed, had to park out back . Perhaps this is a good sign ? The interior is set up where you must walk past the bar to get to the seated area or the sushi bar, which had plenty of seats. The place was very busy, but I found a seat easily.

The menu has a large selection, and I was just looking at the sushi choices, a # of rolls and an impressive amount of fresh fish choices, or so I thought.

Oooh, they have chutoro listed, Nope.  Oooh, they have toro, Nope. Ok what about Tai? Nope.  I ask , "are you just out of them ? " , "No, they aren't in season", the waitress says.  Not in season ? Since when is tuna out of season at a sushi restaurant ? They had regular old maguro, and hamachi.  Ok so hopes dashed, i picked a few other things off the menu, as well as a house salad . I'm always looking forward to trying the ginger dressing at different sushi restaurants. This one , not so much, it was rather bitter, and not very solid, a very soupy bowl of dressing at the bottom of salad. I wasn't impressed.

There are 5 people working behind the bar like machines, that's not always a good thing, plus the basic fish were in the cooler, but pre-cut and looked very much like they were frozen and chopped. I like to see them cut my fish from the chunk of fish they have previously removed from a whole fish, not presliced. I've been to much smaller , less busy places and they accomplish this, why not here ? Because it caters to a larger crowd ?

So after ordering, and selecting regular tuna, I notice on the special board they have Hamachi Toro, well that's a little better, I picked that instead.

The fish tasted fine , but nothing special the rice should have been cooled down a little more to room temperature, but it was a little warm.

Overall it was just ok. And on a 6 star rating I'd give it : 3.5/6 or 58%

Asia Treasure - 399 High Plain Street, Walpole, MA

Tried something different for this review, Takeout! I originally said we should just get it delivered that way I'm not influenced by the restaurant, parking, etc. However, I'm planning on adjusting my rating system so it makes a little more sense and more emphasis on the sushi itself. So without further adieu..

Ordered a small sampling of things from the menu at Asia Treasures, some tobiko, saba, a negihama maki, and a specialty roll called a "torches tuna" , I think they meant torched tuna. seared edges on the tuna in a roll with tobiko, yellowtail as well. The first thing I noticed while looking at the menu is the prices, they were very reasonable, for instance an order of Tobiko was $3.50, compared to my last review where one piece was $3, this was for 2 pieces. Excellent :)   As you can see even for a delivery box it is presented as good as can be inside this plastic containe and a generous amount of gari (ginger) and wasabi was given as well as enough packets of soy sauce.

Everything tasted good the negihama maki  top right in picture could have been rolled a little better it broke apart a little, and salmon wasn't the most buttery slice I've had , but  all in all it was an enjoyable meal and I wouldn't hesitate to order from there again.

The one mistake they did make was my order for saba (mackerel). They put in sake (salmon) instead, which is fine , it tasted good, but I was in the mood for saba instead. Don't worry it didn't ruin my day :)

Rating this on only 2 categories and switching to a system based on a 10 point scale. Much easier to review that way !

Feng - Asian Bistro - 70 Worcester Providence Tpke, Millbury, MA

Checked out a relatively new place today for lunch! I wasn't even sure if they had sushi since it said asian bistro. I walked into the really large restaurant and didn't seen any waitstaff so I looked around and proceed toward the sushi bar in the rear of the restaurant.  There were a few of the sushi chefs that smile and said hello as I took my chair. It took quite a while before anyone came over to me, when they did they poured me a glass of water and started to walk away , I quickly asked for a menu.

Now I was confused, I had grabbed a takeout menu on the way in to see their sushi listings and there was a whole section of Nigiri sushi (a la carte) for the choosing, however when the waiter finally brought me the menu it had lunch specials and other offerings but NO Nigiri, only Maki and Specialty rolls. That is a little confusing. After a few more minutes another waiter came over to ask if I knew what I would like wherein I asked where the a la carte offerings were. "Oh those are in the dinner menu", he said. I'm not sure why they would only include that in the dinner menu and not the lunch but ok.

He FINALLY brought the dinner menu and pointed out that they had Toro today. Nice!  Their special rolls seemed a little bit pricey, I mean minimum of $12 to $15 for a specialty roll, and nothing piqued my interest.

Here is an example: Feng Chef Roll (Salmon, Yellowtail, Tuna, Masago, Radish Sprouts, Asparagus, Avocado, Spicy Mayo and BBQ Eel Sauce) - $15

I picked a few normal rolls off their special which was 2 rolls (maki) and a miso soup for $9. Well that's not bad I thought.  However, the Nigiri is a different story, I didn't realize that it was per piece, not per 2 pieces like most sushi places I've been to. Now that isn't bad until you look at what you pay for what you get. I took a tobiko (flying fish roe) $3, an anago (sea eel) $5, and toro (tuna belly) $10! That means a normal nigiro order of two would have cost me $10 for anago!  The tuna belly was listed as MP (market price). I didn't ask although I probably should have!  I've had toro before for maybe $14 for two and that is what I was expecting.

Anyway on to the food....

I ordered a tuna maki, yellow tail maki and the above 3 pieces of nigiri. The rolls were quickly made and you could tell, the rolls weren't staying together very well and there was something about the nori (seaweed) that I can't put my finger on but it seemed rather chewy. I've never noticed that with any other rolls at any other restaurants I've been too.
Notice the roll opening

The fish itself tasted very fresh however!  I saved the 3 nigiri for last, the anago was delectable with a great eel sauce, the tobiko, sweet and popped in my mouth, and the toro was exquisite, such a fresh , clean taste for the palate, I wanted more. Glad I didn't though for the price!!!

The decor inside the restaurant is tastefully done, very modern, very clean. There was some background music playing which wasn't too loud and relaxed you as you ate, the waitstaff seemed overly friendly and came back a few times to ask how everything was, although there was still noone at the front door when I left as well.

There is a whole other eating area as well plus Hibachi. I don't have any information about that but the lunch crowd was filling there for their show.

Overall I liked the food, the selection wasn't terrible, although 3 things I asked for on the menu they didn't have. The price is what gets me!

Ten Prime Steak and Sushi - 55 Pine St. Providence, RI

A new review tonight! I decided to check out this place with a friend.

We headed off to Providence early Friday night we had no hassle getting there. It was actually quite easy to find the place using a GPS and we scored parking at a meter just around the corner from the restaurant. The restaurant actually offers free valet service and there are numerous lots around the area as well with low rates.

As we entered the restaurant we were promptly greeted by a very friendly hostess within seconds. We asked to sit at the sushi bar and she directed us to our seats. The atmosphere is setup in a modern, night club style feel, with a huge bar dominating the left side of the restaurant. Tucked in the back was a small sushi bar adorned by a very nice saltwater aquarium, and a few more tables beyond that in the back. The decor was interesting enough, busts (naked) of men, women, and the like were prominent in places as well.

The hostess gave us a large drink menu, REALLY large drink menu;  there were wines galore listed in there.  The sushi menu a single page , large board, with several sushi options on it.  The selection on the menu for sushi was limited, however within that limited selection were great choices of fish.

There was no Maki listed on the menu, but there were signature Nigiri dishes, and Designer rolls (designer maki), but not the typical yellowtail roll, or salmon roll.

I got a few pieces of nigiri sushi consisting of Hamachi (yellowtail), Tobiko (flying fish roe), and Suzuki (sea bass). The hamachi was amazing! biting into a piece of this was like heaven, my friend had seconds on that after we were done with our meals!  The tobiko was disappointing in the presentation.  The rolls were round, rather than oblong (gunkan)-submarine style and poorly wrapped, as well as,not being completely filled. Biting into them gave you a mouth full of nori (seaweed) first, which was rather dry. The sea bass was good, a very fresh tasting fish and not tough like I've had at other places.

From the speciality nigiri I chose the Scottish Salmon which consisted of rice topped with salmon, onions, green apple, and lime. I could definitely taste the buttery salmon and the hints of the apple and onion as I bit into this; a very refreshing taste.

Lastly I ordered the Grilled Sushi Sandwich. It was basically made with rice on both sides, topped with spicy eel sauce, filled with tuna and other things which now I can't remember, cut into triangle shaped bite size pieces.  Their menu online does not list the newest items they have on their menu. This was a unique way of presenting sushi and I enjoyed the flavors of it. The roll was a bit too pricey though for what was given : $16.99 for a roll?

Top L-R: Tobiko, Scottish Salmon, Hamachi, Suzuki

A few tdisappointments were presentation. There was no thought into putting this on the tray, it seemed that they squeezed a little sauce there and there, but really just placed it on your tray in some way to make it fit without any artistry at all.   I also noticed was that some of the fish that was in the countertop cooler was presliced. I think that is something that should never be done in most circumstances. The best freshest fish comes from a chef taking his knife to the fish and cutting it to order. Now,  it could be due to the fact that there was also another chef that came to fill in behind the counter who in no way seemed skilled at cutting the fish. I don't know how else to put this, he was an American. He didn't seem to have any formal training with sushi as he was "chopping" the fish that he cut and not handling the knife a way a true trained chef does. Cutting slowly , carefully, at the right angle is important: it impacts the way the fish feels in your mouth as you bite into it.

With that said, I do think everything on my plate tasted amazing. I did have a piece of a specialty roll from my friends plate. We both agreed we didn't like it. This was the Prime Roll. It consisted lobster, asparagus, inside a rice roll topped with a tuna carpacchio and a dry rubbed spice, all on top of a some kirin oil drizzled on the plate. The first thing that came to my mind when I tasted it was : It's really dry!  It just didn't sit well with me and I wouldn't order it again.

Overall I think the place is a great restaurant, but I feel that it is really almost a steak restaurant that decided to try something different and have sushi as well. I liked the taste of my fish and the freshness. I have no complaints about the service, it was fast and friendly. I do think that it isn't a Japanese feel to it at all thought, it feels like a night club with a dominating bar and a small sushi area. I am reviewing places to eat sushi so I must say for what they offer on their menu it is unique, but I feel that it would appeal more to sushi afficionados then the mainstream sushi eaters. With that said, I did enjoy myself immensely, I think if I go back however I'd be more tempted to try some of that kobe or wagyu beef and get my sushi at a real Japanese restaurant.

My search continues for the ultimate sushiya (sushi restaurant)

Galaxie - 957 Reservoir Ave. Cranston, RI

Just checked out the redesigned Galaxie in Cranston for lunch and I was impressed.

The outside of the restaurant leaves something to be desired and perhaps that is still in the process of being updated as well, but don't let that deter you. The inside has been pleasantly designed with a modern asian design and definitely is a elegant looking decor.

I was greeted promptly at the door by some smiling hostesses and asked if I had others in my party. I then asked where the sushi bar is, as you cannot see it upon entering. They politely pointed in the right direction and I got to my seat.

There were a couple people seated at the sushi bar, there isn't a lot of seats there so on a busy day these may be hard to come by, but there are many tables nearby as well to be in full view of it anyway.

Since I had perused the menu before I got here I already had in mind what I wanted to order. The waitress took my drink order and my sushi order :

Miso soup

Heaven Roll - tuna, yellowtail, scallion inside, masago, red and black tobiko outside.
in addition I ordered some Maguro, Wasabi tobiko, and a Hamachi roll.

The miso soup which started off my meal was not bad, but not the best I've had, it seemed a bit watery and low on the miso, had some tofu, and the typical seaweed but nothing too impressive or original there, it is just soup, on to the good stuff....

I watched as the chef started preparing my plate wherein he did some great artwork using some different sauces. He then carefully created all of my rolls on a very large white plate and I was served. This looked great!

I was very impressed with the Heaven Roll which not only had the above tobiko ontop but some wasabi tobiko and a golden tobiko as well, all with their own individual flavors. This was great and something unexpected. The presentation of sushi is part of the enjoyment of it and this is a great example of that.

Now normally one wouldn't complain about the sushi pieces (nigiri) but they should be easily able to fit in ones mouth in one bite, the tuna being cut so long it was difficult to eat it that way.  Everything was prepared and cut fresh as I watched and the rolls and nigiri was prepared perfectly.  I had a bit of eye-watering going on eating those wasabi tobiko pieces though!

They used the "good" gari, as some of you may know the pink ginger (gari) is the cheaper stuff and the tan colored one is a better choice.

The chef was very friendly and we got to talking a little, he explained that he just came here from NY a week or so ago to run the sushi bar here, as well as explaining a little bit about a few things and showing me his $600 sushi knife! He wanted one of the best he stated. Good sign,  and he knows how to use it, watching him cut the fish was great and he took great care to remove any imperfections. Great and friendly attitude on this guyThey will also have some more pricey selections of fish such as Ootoro, once they get busier, can't keep that stuff lying around he said.. I'm sure they will do well once the word spreads.

The waitress was friendly but a bit talkative with the other chef at the bar and this took away from her checking if I needed any more water. As well as after I had finished, she promptly cleared my plate and gave me the check, yet I waited quite a while for anyone to take my payment. Another worker there came over and took the bill from me wherein I waited again for a while, enough that the sushi chef started asking them where was my receipt ?

I won't let this detract from the whole experience as I was entertained and had just enjoyed my meal and really didn't want to go back to work. I definitely would recommend coming here and trying it for yourself.

Tokyo Restaurant - 388 Wickenden St., Providence, RI

*please excuse formatting, work in progress....

Went here with a couple of my neighbors on a Friday night. We had called ahead and asked if we needed a reservation. They said no, but we needed one! It was about a 30 minute wait minimum for a table. Considering the college area and the time, I can't complain, but we asked if we needed a reservation before coming to limit the wait.

The service itself was slow, the noise was unbearable at one point due to the large table of college kids next to us about 20 of them partying it up. It's BYOB which we knew and my neighbor picked up a 6 pack of Sapporo down the street.

I only ordered a few things but all of what I ordered was wonderful. The tobiko (flying fish roe), saba (mackerel) some of the best mackerel I've ever had (as another reviewer stated), and one of their rolls called the River roll. While I'm ashamed to admit I forget everything that was in it, it was topped with black tobiko and it was very enjoyable .
The miso soup was good with a good amount of tofu and kombu in there, good flavor.Overall foodwise the place was great, parking wasn't too bad, price on the Nigiri and Maki was great! Service was very slow, but given the area I'll forgive them a little.....

The prices of everything on the sushi menu was very reasonable!
